Several good thriller anime series are underrated and should be given more attention. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and get ready to dive into the twisted and unpredictable world of the top thriller anime. So, without further ado, here we go! These are less heard of but definitely worth watching. Here are a few suggestions:
Top 10 Best Thriller Anime Series
Gosick
If you like historical and detective themes, Today I want to shine the spotlight on one anime that follows the formula of best psychological thriller anime and does it right. Gosick is one of the top mystery thriller anime that I have ever come across.
This anime follows the story of a young Japanese man named Kazuya Kujouu a foreign student who becomes friends with a mysterious and brilliant girl named Victorique de Blois. Together, they solve supernatural mysteries and uncover dark secrets hidden within their school.
One of the best things is genre mixing in anime, it has horror, romance, and mystery, and most of the time you won’t even know the genre shifted because the overall mystery will hook you to watch it till the end.
Baccano!
To watch Baccano you need patience. Why?
Ok First let me appreciate this masterpiece. It has a good soundtrack, excellent dubbed voice acting, and good characters (Miria and Ennis are the best waifu ahem), from the art style to animation everything is perfect with this crime thriller anime series. The plot is set in 1930s America and follows the interconnected stories of various groups of people, including immortals, alchemists, and thieves. It is a complex and multi-layered story that is full of twists and turns.
Why I said you need patience is because Baccano has a solid plot but not a linear one, let me explain. The most common structure in any story is The Setup, The Confrontation, And The Resolution, a linear narrative progression in order meaning how the story starts, progresses, and how it ends. So viewers can understand what’s going on in the story and what’s happening at the moment.
But Baccano is not like that, the story structure is jumbled to whatever order they deem fits in almost every episode. So you need to pick the pieces in order to understand the show. You need to remember important details that happened in previous episodes which are challenging for weekly viewers.
The time when I was watching this I don’t even know what was happening till episode 4, 5 but as the story progresses things got better, and the plot started to unravel. The best way to watch is binge-watching because you can connect from the previous episodes.
Enough ranting now let’s move to another thriller anime series.
Boogiepop Phantom
Boogiepop Phantom is a unique and fascinating suspense thriller anime series that is sure to capture the attention of viewers. It features a compelling storyline and mysterious characters, and the art style is clean but sometimes animation is not as good as you expect because of its low budget.
This anime follows a group of high school students caught up in a series of mysterious events involving a monster known as Boogiepop. The show explores themes of identity, memory, and the nature of reality. Personally, I think you would enjoy it if you enjoy horror thriller anime series because it contains lots of psychological elements and has a dark strange theme.

He must then enter a series of dangerous and thrilling gambling tournaments in order to pay off his debt. The intense and suspenseful high-stakes mind games of wits between Kaiji and his opponents make this a thrilling watch!
Aoi Bungaku Series
This anime hit differently when I discover this series just thought it is another horror thriller anime I had no idea that it is actually an anthology anime.
So for you guys who don’t know what an anthology is, it is basically when a TV show or movie is comprised of a collection of short stories to make a TV show or movie like 5cm per second.
Aoi Bungaku Series is a 12-episode anime adaptation of six classic Japanese literary works. It is a collection of dark and tragic stories that explore themes of love, loss, and despair. The stories range from the supernatural to the mundane, and each episode tells a unique story about struggling with the human condition.
Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World
The story of this psychological thriller anime series follows the adventures of the main character, Kino, a young traveler. Kino travels through a strange world on the back of a talking motorcycle named Hermes, visiting different countries and exploring their cultures, customs, and people. Along the way, Kino learns about a variety of life lessons, such as the value of life, the meaning of freedom, and the importance of being true to oneself.
We, viewers, are represented by the MC Kino, who does nothing but observe. Although she could easily interfere, judge, and save, she never does. Much like the one who is watching the show. It is very artistic and thought-provoking and approaches a variety of topics. I will not recommend it to those who don’t enjoy thinking much during watching an anime.
Madoka Magica
Madoka Magica is a psychological thriller anime series that has become a fan-favorite for many viewers. It tells the story of a group of teenage girls who are granted magical powers to fight against mysterious creatures known as ‘Witches’. These girls are able to use their newfound abilities to protect humanity from the Witches’ evil forces.

When They Cry
When They Cry is a mystery thriller anime series from 2006 that is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat. The story follows a group of young friends who find themselves caught up in a mystery involving strange disappearances, mysterious deaths, and supernatural events. The animation is beautiful, and the soundtrack is hauntingly atmospheric. The characters are all unique and engaging, and the story is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing.
When They Cry is a great choice for those who enjoy thriller horror anime. This anime is something out of the ordinary and there is also a remake, which I didn’t like, so I would recommend you watch the 2006 anime rather than the remake.
Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil)
I enjoyed this anime but I think in the community it gets too hated because of its art style, which is not that great, but after getting into the story the art style fits perfectly. By not having cool dudes or blue-green haired characters, having a normal-looking character like you and me makes the story more believable
Flowers of Evil is a psychological thriller anime series that follows Takao Kasuga, a young high school student, who steals a beautiful gym uniform from a classmate. As he struggles with his guilt over his transgression, he meets the mysterious Saeki, who begins to uncover his dark secret. This series explores the themes of sin, guilt, and redemption. The characters are complex and the plot twists keep viewers guessing and invested in the story.
Texhnolyze
If you’re looking for something that’s a bit different from the usual r rated anime offerings, then Texhnolyze might be for you. This action thriller anime series follows a group of people in a post-apocalyptic city called Lux as they struggle to survive in a world where technology has become both a blessing and a curse. The show follows a man named Ichise who becomes a test subject for these implants and is pulled into a conflict between rival factions vying for control of the city.
This series also features some excellent action sequences, with a focus on martial arts and cybernetics. The soundtrack is also excellent, and it helps to enhance the atmosphere. Overall, Texhnolyze is a unique and engaging series that is sure to please fans of dark and suspense thriller anime.
